The mission of the University of Maryland Dental School Fellowship Program is to improve access to dental care services for underserved Maryland children, especially those enrolled in the Maryland Medical Assistance or HealthChoice program. The Dental Fellowship Program provides outreach through dental health promotion and education activities and, most important, clinical dental services in local community facilities.
"One of the most productive aspects of the partnership between AMERIGROUP and the Dental School is our fellowship program that places pediatric dental specialists at various community health centers," said Norman Tinanoff, Chair and Professor of the Department of Health Promotion and Policy, University of Maryland Dental School. "For the past three years, AMERIGROUP's support of the fellows gives us resources to aid in the growth of this program and to bring greater access to children in need of dental care."
The Fellowship Program was responsible for treating more than 5,000 patients who generated more than 11,000 dental visits and 40,000 dental procedures in 2005 and 2006. The Dental Fellows work at Head Starts, local community health departments, federally qualified health care centers and hospital operating rooms throughout Maryland.
The AMERIGROUP Foundation is the philanthropic arm of AMERIGROUP Corporation, a multi-state managed healthcare company based in Virginia Beach, VA.
