The Mountaineer Guardian safety award was presented to Coal-Mac's Holden 22 mine. The employees completed the entire year, more than 146,000 employee-hours, without a single reportable accident.
"With safety as a core value, Coal-Mac exemplifies Arch Coal's long-standing commitment to mine safety," said Steven F. Leer, chairman and chief executive officer of Arch Coal. "We applaud the efforts of the Coal-Mac employees in earning statewide recognition for their excellence in mine safety."
In the area of environmental stewardship, Coal-Mac's Phoenix No. 1 mine earned the Wildlife West Virginia award for its outstanding results in wildlife habitat enhancement in Mingo County, W.Va. Coal-Mac engineers implemented a diverse mixture of tree and grass species on its reclaimed mine land to attract a diverse insect population for a stable food supply for native wild turkeys.
Additionally, Coal-Mac's Holden 22 surface mine earned a 2006 reclamation award for the environmental restoration of nearly two miles of previously abandoned mine lands to approximate original contours of the surrounding terrain in just two years.
