Rising Juniors
ATLANTA, April 5 /-/ -- AT&T Inc. (NYSE: T) announced today that the second recipient has been selected to receive a portion of the $20K scholarship, which the company instituted in 2004, to mark its 20th anniversary of wireless service in Georgia and to show its support of students pursuing a career in the telecommunications field.
Karan Gandhi, originally from Baroda, India, is a junior in the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology. Karan will receive the remaining portion of the scholarship, which will be divided between his junior and senior years.
Karan, who currently has a 4.0 GPA, was selected by faculty in the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering to receive the second half of the scholarship for his outstanding academic accomplishments and interest in communications. Karan, a leader on and off campus, is currently involved in research projects in the areas of wireless mobile gaming and computing. His future plans include the pursuit of a master's degree in computer engineering and industrial and systems engineering.
"Georgia Tech and the School of ECE are very grateful for AT&T's continued support of this scholarship program," said Gary S. May, Steve W. Chaddick School Chair of the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Georgia Tech. "We are very proud of Karan's accomplishments and are happy to see his hard work recognized in this way."
The scholarship was designed to benefit two students enrolled in the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering program who have an interest in the field of telecommunications. Each recipient is awarded scholarship money in his or her junior year and again in the senior year.
"We are delighted to present the scholarship to Karan as he exemplifies the qualities and talents of the future leaders of our industry," said Cliff Minor, vice president and general manager for AT&T's wireless operations in Georgia. "Through our commitment to education, we hope to propel these young leaders who will continue to shape our industry for the next 20 years -- and longer."
This first recipient of the scholarship in 2004 was John Parish, of Kingwood, Texas, who at the time was a rising junior majoring in electrical engineering at Georgia Tech. Parish maintained a 4.0 GPA and continues to be a leader on the campus and in the classroom. He received the President's Undergraduate Research Award to support some of his research studies, and his interests include mathematics, physics, engineering, information theory and telecommunications. In 2005, John also received the national Barry Goldwater Scholarship for his work in the field of cryptography. Parish is currently working with the Department of Defense as part of Georgia Tech's cooperative education program.
