CHICAGO, March 21 // -- Butler Rubin Saltarelli & Boyd LLP has awarded its annual diversity scholarship to Northwestern law student Jamie C. Cooper. Cooper is the second scholarship recipient of the program Butler Rubin established with Northwestern University School of Law to foster diversity in the legal profession.
A native of Omaha, Nebraska, Cooper is currently a first-year law student at Northwestern University School of Law and expects to receive her law degree in 2009. In addition to a $10,000 scholarship for tuition and other expenses associated with law school, Cooper will work as a summer associate at Butler Rubin.
A magna cum laude graduate of the University of Nebraska at Omaha with a degree in Spanish, Cooper was a member of several honor societies and participated in a study abroad program in Mexico. At Northwestern, she currently participates in the Black Women Lawyers Association of Greater Chicago, the Black Law Student Association, the Latino Law Student Association, the Women's Leadership Coalition, and the Council on Legal Opportunity and Education.
The Butler Rubin scholarship is renewable for Cooper's second and third year of study, and Cooper will also work at Butler Rubin for at least two weeks after her second year of law school.
"We are a boutique law firm committed to diversity, and our scholarship gives us the opportunity every summer to establish what we hope turns out to be a long-term relationship with a diverse law student," said Julie Rodriguez Aldort, a member of the firm's hiring and diversity committees.
Northwestern University School of Law and Butler Rubin Saltarelli & Boyd LLP created the scholarship program to assist diverse students financially and to create employment opportunities for those students during their law school careers. Students are selected for the scholarship based on high levels of performance and achievement, a strong interest in the private practice of law in the area of business litigation, an intention to remain in the Chicago area following graduation from Northwestern, and outstanding interpersonal and communication skills.
Butler Rubin selects one scholarship winner per year. In 2006, Northwestern Law Student Emily Quick received the inaugural scholarship. Quick is now a second-year law student at Northwestern. She spent last summer at Butler Rubin and will work several weeks at Butler Rubin next summer. "Last summer several Butler Rubin lawyers really took me under their wings and invited me to attend hearings, depositions and even a mediation. We keep in touch and I am looking forward to going back for a few weeks in August," said Quick.
Formed in 1980, Chicago-based Butler Rubin has established itself as a well-known litigation boutique assisting clients nationally and internationally in the core practice areas of reinsurance and complex business litigation, including antitrust and legacy liability issues.
