Management Solutions
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. and SALT LAKE CITY, Oct. 12 -Avocent Corporation (Nasdaq: AVCT) today announced that its Mobile Solutions Division has become part of its LANDesk Software Division. The two groups -- LANDesk, based in Salt Lake City, and the Mobile Solutions Division, based in Calgary, Canada -- also announced that they have successfully completed the integration of Avocent's mobile device management software called SonicSentinal into LANDesk's systems management and security management solutions.
"LANDesk and the Avocent Mobile Solutions Division offer products that have a very high level of synergy," said John Cooper, chairman and chief executive officer of Avocent. "The combination of these two vibrant businesses and the integration of their products is another example of the type of increased business value Avocent can deliver. Customers can cut costs and align IT with strategic business objectives more closely through better management of mobile systems."
The integration of these divisions and their technologies will strengthen an IT organization's ability to centrally manage mobile devices by adding additional security and over-the-air device management capabilities directly into the LANDesk management console -- such as the ability to remotely delete contact data, e-mail and other sensitive data if a device is lost or stolen. IT administrators can also now lock down a mobile device, perform a soft reset, clear memory and erase memory cards, blacklist software and more all via wireless carrier connection.
Immediately available capabilities that demonstrate the Avocent mobile division integration with LANDesk solutions include the ability to gather detailed inventory on handheld devices and view history of all management transactions -- as well as increased device support including Palm Treo, Blackberry, and Windows Mobile 2003 and Mobile 5 based devices.
"Industry analyst research shows one of the fastest growing segments of the IT market is management of mobile devices. It is estimated that in the next five years, there will be a ten fold increase in the number of smart mobile devices in the enterprise," said Joe Wang, president and chief executive officer of LANDesk Software. "To meet this growing demand, we are pleased to welcome the Mobile Solutions team to LANDesk. This team's extensive experience and expertise in mobile technologies will significantly strengthen our ability to develop the useful or advanced solutions for mobile device management and mobile IT systems administration."
The existing LANDesk and Avocent mobile engineering teams both utilize agile development methodologies that will enable them to deliver future solutions more rapidly. The mobility group has pioneered products that enable remote management of servers through mobile devices, security software for authenticating Intranet and extranet browsing, and mobile device management from a central web console.
Last month the Avocent mobile team introduced two new products that enable remote management of servers through mobile devices such as smartphones. SonicAdmin PRO and QR install on any Windows server and can be run from a BlackBerry or any Windows Mobile 5-based device.
