    Background on SCAN

SCAN has several different initiatives aimed at helping improve children's welfare, including Settlement Houses, Reach for the Stars, Education, After School Programs, Summer Programs Family and Healing Our Programs and Services. While public schools deteriorate at an alarming rate, SCAN has established educational programming as a priority at seven East Harlem and South Bronx public schools. Its innovative, strength-based approach offers traditional three R's interspersed with creative non-traditional learning activities. Some of the exciting programs are: whole language family literacy, parent mentor literacy workshops, adult basic education from pre-GED to ESL classes, computer workshops, the Pete Pascale Learning Center and Goodman Children's Library at LaGuardia Memorial House, creative writing and poetry classes, summer day camp infused with whole language literacy experiences, SAT classes and weekly diaries required of our budding NBA stars and members of SCAN's El Barrio Children's Dance Ensemble. With these programs, SCAN has become a child welfare pathfinder in the establishment of a definitive school-based presence.
