Weather Underground Introduces Streaming Weather Radio Feature

SAN FRANCISCO, Feb. 6 // -- Weather Underground(R), the nation's first online provider of weather related content, today announced the availability of their new streaming radio feature via http//www.wunderground.com/wxradio/, offering web users access to live streaming NOAA Weather Radio (NWR) updates via community contributors.

    Operated by the National Weather Service, NWR broadcasts continuous weather information from National Weather Service stations. The radio updates are offered as a public service and include more than 940 transmitters covering all 50 states, adjacent coastal waters, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and the U.S. Pacific Territories.

    "In an effort to provide users with the most comprehensive weather information, we developed the new streaming radio feature to allow people with NOAA weather radios to rebroadcast the reports online," said Alan Steremberg, president and co-founder of Weather Underground. "By offering this new feature, we are sharing critical information that previously has not been accessible to the general public without specialized weather radio equipment."

    To date, more than 100 users have signed up to rebroadcast their local NWR. Weather Underground visitors can easily listen to their local NWR broadcast by selecting their city, and clicking play.

    Weather Underground currently offers a comprehensive suite of weather related services, including the Personal Weather Station (PWS) network that allows users to attach backyard automated weather stations to the Weather Underground community. Thousands of station owners already participate in the Weather Underground worldwide network, allowing the company to provide accurate and up-to-date weather information.
